Who is Narges Mohammadi?
Narges Mohammadi is an Iranian woman fighting for human rights in Iran - a cause she has dedicated her whole life to. According to CNN, Mohammadi has been a prisoner for the past twenty years. She has been sentenced repeatedly for openly criticizing the Iranian government because of her activism. Ms. Mohammad has continuously campaigned against the death penalty, solitary confinement and the end of female oppression in Iran. Amazingly, not even the repressive confines of Tehran’s infamous Evin Prison have been able to subdue her fighting spirit nor silence her voice for change.
Narges Mohammadi won the Nobel Peace Prize.
Last Friday, she won the Nobel Peace Prize for “her fight against the oppression of women in Iran and her fight to promote human rights and freedom for all,” the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced in Oslo. This marks an incredible achievement for Ms. Mohammad, the second Iranian to receive this esteemed award. However, it’s not just her achievement; it’s a milestone for the global community and all those who tirelessly advocate for equality and freedom. It is a big step forward, assuring women’s voices are heard and amplified.
In an audio recording from Evin Prison, shared with CNN before the Nobel Peace Prize was announced, Mohammadi is heard leading the chants of “woman, life, freedom.” This slogan was used to protest the death of 22-year-old Masha Jhina Amini, who died in police custody for allegedly not wearing her headscarf properly. Ms. Mohammadi protests, stating, “I will continue to fight against the relentless discrimination, tyranny and gender-based oppression by the oppressive religious government until women's liberation.”
She also wrote in an opinion piece published by The Times last month, “What the government may not understand is that the more of us they lock up, the stronger we become." She adds, “All of them, no matter how they were arrested, had one demand: Overthrow the Islamic Republic regime.”Narges Mohammadi highlights the strength and unity of the Iranian women- they will not stop until the Islamic Republic regime is overthrown. THEY WANT CHANGE!
